Abstract
This article offers the personal perspective of a 40-year cancer survivor. The author's medical and personal histories lead to a discussion of the fear and secrecy that once shrouded the cancer experience and its survivors. Communication, hope, and support are seen as integral elements of survival. By taking responsibility for oneself, one has the potential to achieve balance and to integrate the physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social aspects of one's life. People who were once referred to as cancer victims are now viewed as people who are victorious over cancer.
