Self-Neglect:

A Practioner's Perspective

Pages 35-42 | Published online: 14 Oct 2010

Abstract

The practitioner's concern in cases of self-neglect is not with definitions, but rather with the conflict between the societal imperative to protect the vulnerable from harm while honoring individual autonomy. After touching briefly on informed consent, the causative factors of neglect, and patterns among clients who refuse care, the author discusses methods for enhancing trust and support with resistant clients to increase the likelihood of their accepting intervention.
