An Integrative Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to Understanding, Assessing, and Treating Female Sexual Dysfunction

Pages 19-35 | Published online: 05 Oct 2008

Abstract

There is a new and disturbing trend to medicalize female sexuality with an emphasis on prescribing Viagra, testosterone, and estrogen supplements. An integrated model of sex therapy is described which addresses psychological, relational, medical, sexual skills, erotic scenarios, and situational factors. This model acknowledges the woman's personal responsibility for sexuality and the essential role of the couple being an intimate team. Medical interventions, if used, must be integrated into the couple sexual style which is based on intimacy, pleasuring, and eroticism.
