Social Constructions of Motherhood and Mothers on Drugs

Implications for Treatment, Policy, and Practice

Pages 43-59 | Received 04 Jun 2004, Accepted 10 Feb 2005, Published online: 07 Sep 2008

Abstract

The theoretical lens of feminist family therapy is used in this critical review of the literature concerning mothers who are in recovery from addiction and their ongoing stigmatization by society. The author's goal is to look at the issue of ‘motherhood’ as it has been constructed historically; how mothers on drugs are viewed by society, and the current policies and practices that result.
