Initiator Status and Separation Adjustment

Pages 141-156 | Published online: 11 Sep 2009

Abstract

This paper discusses initiator status and separation adjustment. The author is concerned that previous research concentrates on comparisons between non-initiators and initiators. It is argued that rigorous descriptions of the experiences of choosing or not choosing separation and divorce are needed in order to contextualize comparisons. As well, the research suffers from a lack of knowledge about the extent to which stage theories which describe grief and mourning are applicable to separation and divorce. The author presents observations gained from clinical experience with groups of non-initiating clients. These observations are intended to stimulate discussion about research questions and methods which might lead to more effective clinical strategies with clients experiencing separation and divorce.
