Abstract
The study described in this article employed a sample of 231 adults to examine Cherlin's views on the institutionalization of first marriage and the incomplete institutionalization of remarriage after divorce. Questionnaire data from this sample supports each tenet of Cherlin's views. Specifically, this data suggests that: (a) there is widespread agreement regarding what is expected of parents in first marriages, (b) conflict over parental roles is uncommon in first marriages, (c) there is widespread disagreement regarding what is expected of parents in remarriages after divorce, and (d) conflict over parental roles is common in remarriages after divorce. In addition to discussing the study under consideration, this article outlines an agenda for future research.
