Abstract
Objectives: To review current estimates of fibromyalgia prevalence in the clinic and community from studies recently published or in progress. Results: Data from 9 studies are available, two of which have been previously published. Studies which use reliable ascertainment methods and criteria [emphasizing tender points and pain] tend to show community prevalence to be about 2-4%. Prevalence in children is 6.2%. Greater than 90% of cases in adults occur in women, 67% in girls. Psychological and socio-demographic characteristics are associated with fibromyalgia symptoms and diagnosis. Cases in the community resemble cases seen in the clinic. Conclusion: Fibromyalgia is common in the community [2-4%] both in adults and children. Cases are similar to those seen in the clinic.
