The Story of Treasures in Economics at Purdue University and How They Found Their Way to Indiana

Abstract

In the Management &Economics Library at Purdue University is a unique and valuable collection of the history on economic thought, numbering over 3,000 books, pamphlets and periodical titles published between 1502 and 1875. This article chronicles the acquisition and development of this collection from its discovery in a London bookstore by Nathan Rosenberg through the compilation of a book catalog by librarian John Houkes. The story includes excerpts of the letters between the Krannert Graduate School of Management and Economics Dean and others involved in the major purchase. The article also includes a look at the major works in the collection, pictures of several of these books and the furnishings of the room.
