Pages 37-48 | Published online: 22 Oct 2008

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine book theft in university libraries in Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the extent of book theft, types of security controls in use, administrative policies calculated to deter book thefts and methods of educating the university community on the effects of book theft. Data relating to book theft were obtained through use of a questionnaire distributed to all 22 of the university libraries in Nigeria. A total of 18 completed forms (82%) were returned. Book theft was severe in three universities (17%). Twelve libraries (67%) did not have figures on stolen library collections. Stolen books were discovered mainly through the exit control for (100%) and suprise checks at student hostels (72%). Punishments for book theft include expulsion from the university or suspension of library rights. The methods used to educate the university community on the effects of book theft include discussions at faculty board meetings. Suggestions are made for the prevention or reduction of book theft in university libraries in Nigeria.
