Abstract
Libraries and information agencies may solve their information organization tasks through solutions as simple as spreadsheets or as complex as full blown object oriented databases. FileMaker Pro fits into a niche between the non-relational simplicity of spreadsheets and simple file systems and more complex systems like Microsoft Access and Oracle. This article describes the strengths and weaknesses of the program. It is easy to use but not as powerful or flexible as other relational systems. Although avoiding the jargon and theory of relational database management, it is a relational system with the ability to combine data from several tables to create forms and report that reflect those relationships. An interesting security system based on “privilege sets” is described.
