Abstract
Maintenance of a personal reprint library is becoming more difficult for health care professionals and researchers with the increasing volume of scientific publishing. The purpose of this article is to identify the issues and decisions one most resolve when determining whether a personal reprint library is an appropriate expenditure of time and money, and in the subsequent organization of the reprint library. Issues addressed include a needs assessment, identifying an appropriate controlled vocabulary, physical arrangement of the collection, the need for cross reference, weeding, and automating the reprint library. Criteria for selection of a software package to manage the collections are discussed, as are some of the specific packages designed for reprint file management.
