"All I Need Is in the Computer":

Reference and Bibliographic Instruction in the Age of CD-ROMs

Pages 221-228 | Published online: 17 Mar 2009

Abstract

In this age of CD-ROMs and other electronic technology, librarians must take their responsibility to educate patrons on the use of these popular new sources very seriously. The apparent ease of using CD-ROMs can seriously mislead students about the appropriateness of their search results. Through the reference interview and bibliographic instruction, librarians have the opportunity to familiarize students with the vast power of CD-ROMs, to teach them to harness that power, and to provide them with the critical skills necessary to question whether a particular CD-ROM database is the appropriate place to find information on a certain topic. Specific methods for doing this are included.
