Abstract

Extension of online reference into the public library sector has been hindered by the financial, personnel, and procedural contraints present in most public libraries. Experiences of the San Jose Public Library and other DIALIB libraries are descibrd, showing that imaginative planning, combined with the solid commitment of the library administration, can overcome these obstacles through selective costcutting, interlibrary cooperation, fee recovery, work simplification and efficient staff utilization.
