Abstract
SDI, whether manual, computerized, or hybrid, is particularly important in the technical and scientific information establishments of the industrial sector: there are some clear economic reasons for this phenomenon. Both information professionals and library users benefit from the various forms of SDI currently available-some of which are discussed, with pros. cons, additional comments. The conclusion is that even very limited SDI service is an option, and more profitable than none at all. Developing technologies, such as Office Automation and Distributed Computing, give hope for the future of SDI as a custom but affordable and cost effective service.
