Abstract

Information science can be a professionally satisfying alternative to industrial or academic careers at the bench for the technically trained individual. Abstracting and indexing serve the technical community directly, saving time and effort in acquiring information from the literature and patents. Descriptions are given of the abstracting and indexing operations at the Central Abstracting and Indexing Service of the American Petroleum Institute with emphasis on the information professionals involved.
