American Zoological Park Libraries and Archives

Historical Considerations and Their Current Status

Pages 49-60 | Published online: 18 Oct 2008

Abstract

Although accumulations of books have probably been a part of American zoological parks for as long as the zoological parks have been established, these accumulations have not been considered libraries until quite recently; most of these accumulations have only been established as libraries since the 1960s. Consideration is given to this historical development, followed by an analysis of the current (1987) status of these libraries. Specific information is presented on 78 libraries concerning their staffing, facilities, budgets, collection management, and services. Information is also presented on 32 archive collections.
