The Impact of Weeding on Collection Development

Sci-Tech Collections vs. General Collections

Pages 25-36 | Published online: 18 Oct 2008

Abstract

What impact does the removal of materials have on the decision-making for collection development? The literature of librarianship indicates that weedings should have a major impact, but practice does not appear to follow theory, according to responses from 31 selectors interviewed between weeding sci-tech collections and general collections? Again, the answer appears to be no. This article reviews the literature of weeding and summarizes the weeding practices of some selectors in sci-tech, academic, and public libraries. Some differences between sci-tech and general collections are discussed.
