Abstract

The development of the first electronic digital computers in the 1940's fulfilled a hypothesis made 100 years earlier by Charles Babbage. The technical advances that allow us to manipulate vast amounts of information and data were made possible by the efforts of a few visionaries. This survey attempts to track the work documenting their efforts.
