Gauging Faculty Utilization of Science Journals

A Defensive Strategy for a Lean Budget Era

Summary

Tighter budgets and runaway journal prices have made it necessary for growing numbers of academic libraries to trim their collections. In the Rutgers Science Research Libraries, the following three different methods have been utilized to help determine which journals should be retained and which might be eliminated with the least disruption to ongoing research and educational programs; A survey of faculty journal preferences; ajournai reshelving study; and preparation of ranked journal lists based on faculty publications and citations. The results of these studies are compared and contrasted.
