Abstract

Libraries have been involved in resource sharing initiatives for many years, yet the advent of new technologies, such as the World Wide Web, have fostered unprecedented growth in the number of institutions impacting the world with rapidly evolving information products and services. Texas Tech University Library has established a virtual collection of environmental information on playa lakes and the Ogallala Aquifer (http://www.lib.ttu.edu/playa/playa.htm), consisting of bibliographic citations, abstracts, full-text documents, and images. The purpose of this article is to introduce this electronic collection, discuss the methodology of designing the resource, describe how it functions, and present a picture of future developments, with the hope of encouraging other librarians to participate in the effort to build a global digital library.
