Resource Sharing in Engineering and Science Libraries

Pages 39-55 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

SUMMARY

This paper examines the background and general principles of resource sharing in engineering and science libraries. It provides an understanding of the collections, electronic access, user expectations, and resource sharing necessary to meet the information needs of library clients. The author surveys interlibrary loan, document delivery services, and just in time purchases, and also presents case studies and bibliographic citations on these topics. Modern technical advancements and reciprocal, consortial, or contractual arrangements make it possible to deliver these services with faster turnaround times and lower costs. The paper also discusses specialized materials commonly used by engineers and scientists and recommended methods for obtaining these materials.
