Pages 105-128 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

SUMMARY

There are over 3,200 search engines on the Internet, and with so many choices it is not easy to determine which ones find information needed by engineers. This article presents the features and services often virtual libraries (also called annotated web directories) that cover engineering networked resources. Large multidisciplinary sites, such as Google aid Yahoo, plus smaller sites focused exclusively on e gineering or academic subjects, such as the Edinburgh Engineering Virtual Library (EEVL) and Infomme, are compared. Methods used to make comparisons include searching the databases to see which common and uncommon engineering resources were included. Additionally, some engineering keywords were searched in each index and the number of results are presented.
