Abstract
To be successful library leaders in the 21st century, it is important to make decisions that blend the strengths of the past, the demands of the present, and the uncertainty of the future as well as to have someone who will take a lead. Emotional intelligence (EI) is a crucial component of leadership. The five components of EI are examined in the article. Based on a testimony of a librarian from Azerbaijan, who envisioned the changes taking place in the profession and became a catalyst of these changes, the article describes a development of Azerbaijani librarianship for the last 10 years.
