Zoo and Aquarium Libraries

An Overview and Update

Pages 71-87 | Received 09 Oct 2003, Accepted 01 Mar 2004, Published online: 25 Sep 2008

ABSTRACT

Within the world of special science libraries, zoo and aquarium libraries have an especially narrow focus and purpose. Nevertheless, they play an important part in the functioning of their parent institutions, which currently emphasize their roles in education, conservation, and research. This paper summarizes the results of a survey which found that despite a wide range in the sizes of surveyed facilities and the general economic hard times, zoo and aquarium libraries have increased their holdings, resources, and scope. They are also recognized as important in helping their parent institutions fulfill their modern missions.
