Still Unheard by the Mainstream

Abstract

The second wave of the women's movement beginning in the 1960s led to a renewed interest in the roles that women have played in history and society, particularly in areas formerly reserved for men. Although women were traditionally routed out of science there were those who still made significant contributions. In the last two decades girls and women have been encouraged to make science their life's work. How are these events represented in history serials, science serials and women's studies serials?

This article surveys serial articles relating to women's studies, history and science from 1970 through 1995, and locates articles that concentrate on the historical role of women in science. Contextual analysis of where and when these articles appeared is provided. The significance of these articles for archivists, historians and researchers is discussed.
