ABSTRACT
This article introduces a six-step approach to HIV prevention to be included in long-term individual counseling of adolescents. The theoretical framework is based on theories of adolescent development and risk knowledge, safer sex strategy, HIV prevention models, and counseling techniques. A case illustration will show how to apply the six steps: (1) exploration of client's feelings and perceptions around being sexually active; (2) assessment of client's knowledge about HIV/AIDS; (3) exploration of client's barriers to having safer sex; (4) exploration of client's perceptions of what constitutes risk behavior; (5) development of client's own safer sex plan; and (6) provision of appropriate referrals.
