How Can Mothers and Fathers Become Involved in the Sexuality Education of Adolescents?

ABSTRACT

Parents influence the sexual attitudes and behaviors of adolescents directly and indirectly, but they seem reluctant to discuss sexuality with their adolescent children because of a lack of knowledge and understanding about human sexuality (Jorgensen, 1991). This suggests that parent participation in sexuality education is a neglected area of research that should be examined. We conducted focus group interviews with adolescents and their parents to investigate parent involvement in sexuality education. Results suggest that adolescents desire more interaction with parents about sexuality but approaches identified by parents are in conflict with ideas generated by adolescents.
