Gay Adolescents in Rural Areas

Experiences and Coping Strategies

Pages 129-144 | Published online: 25 Sep 2008

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore issues faced by gay adolescents in rural areas, to gain knowledge regarding support systems of these young persons and to begin to understand the need for “gay-friendly” social services in rural areas. Eight young adults (18-25) from rural areas were interviewed. Common themes that emerged include isolation, supportive teachers, abuse, and resiliency. Implications for social work practice include utilizing generic phrases and interventions that were supportive of these students' diversity without placing the professional at risk and advocating for policy changes through the state legislative process aimed at reducing institutionalized homophobia.
