ABSTRACT

This article is based on a telephone interview between Joan E. Biren and Gayle Pitman. During the interview, Joan, a lesbian-feminist photographer and video producer, talked about the effect the women's movement had on her career choice, the barriers and oppression she endures as a result of working for social change, and the personal characteristics and coping strategies she utilizes as she attempts to overcome these barriers. Joan's story offers an inspiring portrait of a woman who, in the face of adversity, stays true to her feminist politics and integrates lesbianism, feminism, and activism in her everyday life.
