Abstract
This ar ti cle ex am ines the prev a lence of fe male ju venue delinquency and reviews the literature from a sociological and practiceperspective. Specifically, we focus attention on girls' ag gres sion and vi o lence and ar gue that close anal y sis of the data indicates that changes in arrests of girls for certain violent offenses re fleet com plex changes in the po lie ing of girls' ag gres sion (in clud ing the ar rest of girls for mi nor forms of fam ily vi o lence) rather than ac tual changes in girls' be hav ior. Fol lowing this review, we consider more traditional themes in girls'delinquency: sta tus offenses, larcency theft and drug use, that still ac count for the bulk of girls' arrests. Finally, we briefly re view trends in the treat ment of girls by the ju ve nile jus tice sys tem, and we dis cuss the emergingliteratureonpromisinginterventionswithgirls.
