Abstract
Seniors have been found to be the greatest users of health care services, but also have a lower ability to read and comprehend health information and to navigate the health care system. Health information must be provided at a level and in a form that is useable for seniors. A study was conducted to determine if the problem of inadequate health literacy was an issue for the seniors in northern Idaho. Close to 30% of the senior participants needed at least supplemental teaching materials to the written instruction forms normally given upon discharge from the hospital. Comparisons with other study findings are made and suggestions for improved or alternate forms of communicating health information for seniors are discussed.
