Abstract
This paper x-rays the transition from manual library operations to integrated library automated systems. This change will lead to developing new roles for libraries and librarians in the 21st century. The paper explores the possibility of initiating a digital library project anchored on the existing traditional library setting. The challenges involved in the design and development of infrastructures for a functional digital library within a given institution were also elucidated. The importance of digital libraries and associated opportunities in the present global village was also discussed.
