Abstract
In a consumer-focused healthcare marketplace, the provision of in-suite Internet access to patients is among the boutique services hospitals can offer for product differentiation. A mechanism for influencing the total patient experience, Internet access can positively impact clinical outcomes indirectly, by enabling the patient to maintain contact with family and loved-ones and to exercise a level of control over personal and professional affairs, and directly by connecting the patient to relevant patient education materials. Among vehicles most commonly deployed for providing in-suite access, each offers advantages and disadvantages. However, implementation of wireless networks coupled with laptops-for-patients (LFP) lending programs may provide the most efficient and effective access solution. Such implementations also afford hospital libraries opportunities to exercise leadership.
