Abstract

The present study aimed to: (1) identify the educational needs of emergency health care practitioners related to psychological issues following trauma and (2) assess practice differences among practitioners who have had varying amounts of training on PTSD. Data were collected from 109 emergency medicine practitioners. Results indicated that participants felt generally competent in working with post-injury patients. The actual need for additional training on post-trauma psychological reactions was indicated by the fact that nearly 80% reported four or less hours of formal training in PTSD. Formal and informal training amounts were associated with feelings of competency with PTSD-related training, but were not associated with actual referral practices.
