Abstract
The study of dissociation and dissociative disorders in Puerto Rico began in the 1980s. Initially the literature was limited to case-studies and anecdotal reports. In the 1990s a plethora of more sophisticated studies began to be published, including the reliability and validity of some well-known dissociative instruments and scales, including the Dissociative Experiences Scale. Also, some doctoral students in clinical psychology decided to conduct their research dissertations on dissociative disorders. Beginning with the new century, more sophisticated research methodologies are being applied to the study of dissociation in Puerto Rico, including some recent epidemiological findings with youths. Although still limited, the data-base on dissociation in Puerto Rico has been increasing rapidly. The article concludes with some reflections on how to be successful in obtaining support for future studies.
