Abstract
College students, whose age placed them in the Generation X cohort (n = 210), were surveyed prior to and after taking a course on adult development and aging. The surveys were designed to evaluate attitudes toward men and women in three older age categories. These findings suggest that, contrary to the popular literature that describes the most negative attitudes directed toward the Boomer generation, these young people tended to view them more positively than older cohorts. While ageist attitudes are more pronounced toward the oldest age groups, a significant decline in ageist attitudes toward older men and women in all three referent age groups was observed at the completion of the course.
