Abstract
This study describes the development, psychometric characteristics and norms of a Gay Life Events Scale (GALES) for homosexual men, standardized in two Western countries. The scale has been developed to determine the stresses of life events, including those related to sexual orientation and AIDs, and to asses the impact of stigmatization on mental and physical health. The scale exhibits hight vaildity when compared with common items in its parent instrument and exhibits cross-cultrual stability. Data suggest that the relationship between life events and the emotional distress and life chage associated with them is closer in homosexual that in heterosexual men.
