Abstract
In recounting his interactions with psychiatry-in psychotherapy, as an openly gay candidate for residency, with depression and in recovery from chemical dependence-the author, who is a gay and social activist, physician and writer, offers perspective on the impact of psychiatry on the trajectory of social change.
