The Discovery of Louisa May Alcott's Pseudonym

Pages 193-196 | Published online: 22 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

The pseudonym used by Louisa May Alcott for her sensational fiction was discovered by Leona Rostenberg when she found at Houghton Library, Harvard University, a collection of five letters from Boston publishers Elliott, Thomes and Talbot to Alcott. Written in 1865 and 1866, the letters disclosed the pseudonym “A. M. Barnard,” the name of the periodical where some of the thrillers appeared (The Flag of Our Union) and the titles of three of Alcott's sensational narratives.
