Abstract
The existence of substance abusing or dependent and psychiatrically diagnosed adolescents is of special interest to those in the field of substance abuse treatment. This population presents unique problems upon entry into treatment systems and for the duration of their treatment. The author discusses some special issues of this population and offers special considerations for their treatment.
The issue of treatment utilization is examined and it is proposed that substance abuse and psychiatric treatment for adolescents is over utilized and efficacy is understudied. Due to the unique problems associated with this population, the author encourages special attention be paid to the potential for abuse within this system.
