Dissolution of Coha bitation and Marriage in Sweden

Pages 415-421 | Published online: 12 Dec 2008

Abstract

Many raise the question of whether unmarried cohabitating couples are more unstable as dyads than married couples. Using data from official Swedish statistics and from an empirical study of unmarried cohabitants, this paper attempts to answer the question of whether divorce/separation is more common among cohabitants than among the married. An overview of the situation concerning marriage and cohabitation in today's Sweden is presented, and an attempt is made to define unmarried cohabitation.
