Helping the Helper Heal:

Co-Dependency in Helping Professionals

Abstract

Social workers who have their own problems with alcohol or other substances may be ineffective or harmful to chemically dependent clients. This article discusses the nature of co-dependency as it affects those who try to help alcoholic or addicted clients. It provides information about the possible extent of co-dependent social workers, the consequences of their activities, and the precautions to be taken to vitiate any harm.
