Fieldwork Among the Navajo:

Implications for Social Work Research and Practice

Pages 101-112 | Published online: 11 Sep 2009

Abstract

Fifty-five Navajo uranium workers and 33 key informants were interviewed concerning the psychosocial aspects of uncompensated occupational illnesses. Within this context, issues related to fieldwork among the Navajo are discussed, including research design, culture shock, working conditions, legitimation, and access. Moreover, appreciation of Navajo culture and the principle of noninterference have widespread implications for social work research and practice.
