Abstract
This chapter is an introduction to a form of intervention designed to counter the detrimental effects of the adversary legal system—divorce mediation. Following a history of the movement, the author discusses differences between mediation and marital and family psychotherapy. The different types of mediation services currently being offered are described. Mediation is evaluated in terms of who uses the services and factors affecting utilization; the effectiveness of mediation; client, dispute, and mediator factors related to mediation success; and client satisfaction. The limitations of mediation, as well as its promise, are also delineated.
