Abstract

In this paper two complementary models are presented to guide needs assessment efforts for prevention programs. Each of these models focuses on events as the core elements in the study of human needs. One model is concerned with the nature and impact of stressful events on psychological distress; the other model is concerned with personal growth and development that may arise through integration of positive life experiences. After the models are described, suggestions are provided on how best to use them when conducting a prevention oriented needs assessment.
