&
Pages 97-108 | Published online: 20 Oct 2008

Summary

The preventive role of breastfeeding is examined in the context of evidence from comparative lactation and in light of recent scientific knowledge. Preventive advantages are discussed in relation to nutrition, infections, allergy, emotional development, contraception and economics and food production. It is concluded that breastfeeding has a considerable preventive role in both technically less and more developed countries, but that the main aspects of such prevention vary considerably with circumstances and risks.
