Abstract

This article contains four sections, the first outlines the individual needs and characteristics which are generally identified with the early, middle, and late stages of a person's career. This discussion provides the framework for the remainder of the volume. The second section presents the case of Dr. Otto A. Faust, a 100 year old pediatrician whose career spanned 64 years and had several transitions. A brief analysis of the case leads into the third section, which examines seven career Stressors. The concluding section identifies the four basic social and cultural forces which will be developed throughout the volume and which will influence careers into the twenty-first century: (1) women at work, (2) the decline of blue-collar labor, (3) the changing demographic distribution, and (4) the growth of a world economy.
