Abstract
This chapter begins with a definition and comparison of the concepts “personal social network” and “social support.” Then a model is introduced to articulate what is known about how personal networks are developed. The transition from concepts to practices is accomplished in the chapter through a discussion of networks and the empowerment process. This discussion is followed by examination of an experimental family support program designed with personal networks in mind. The chapter ends with an articulation of links between the healthy network development and public policy.
