Families, Policy, and Family Support Policies

Pages 109-126 | Published online: 20 Oct 2008

Abstract

An historical perspective on family policy is presented along with issues shaping future directions. Two prevention-oriented policies in particular are discussed: respite care services to assist persons caring for elderly infirm family members and family (parental) leave for new parents. The goals of previous family policies are challenged and recommendations are made for more realistic approaches to formulating successful family policies.
