Summary
A description is provided of the development of primary prevention in Italy after the passage of innovative legislation in the 70s. Key prevention concepts and strategies of intervention are described. These include: (a) community analysis and intervention methodologies which blend institutional, volunteer, and self-help projects; (b) multidimensional organizational analysis; (c) the use of group training as a tool to assist in the empowerment of community groups; and (d) individual empowerment programs. Examples of programs are provided.
